A common issue with the 2nd generation B58 engine is its liquid intercooler system's rapid overheating, preventing it from recovering. This leads to surges in Intake Air Temperature (IAT), causing the ECU to reduce vehicle power output and eventually enter limp mode. CSF engineers witnessed this overheating problem firsthand at the Global Time Attack Finals at Buttonwillow Raceway in November 2019. Several new, heavily modified race Supras could barely complete two to three laps in moderate ambient conditions before entering limp mode, forcing drivers to perform cool-down laps (or two), with some even resorting to hosing down the front heat exchangers with cold water.
The CSF High-Performance B58 Intercooler is a critical component for keeping your Supra/BMW's charge air cool and preventing limp mode. An upgraded intercooler is especially important when upgrading turbochargers and/or utilizing performance tuning software. The stock 2nd generation B58 intercooler is a 1-row, 25mm thick unit. In comparison, CSF utilized the industry-exclusive, largest-in-class 68mm 2-row core featuring CSF's B-Tube technology. The unique tank design allows CSF's larger core to fit within the stock cooling system's housing. CSF's enhanced design includes provisions for the transmission cooler bracket and a rock guard with improved airflow characteristics. CSF is the only company to include the rock guard and the stock transmission cooler mounting points, allowing for a plug-and-play installation.
