Porsche 911 Turbo / Carrera (991) Plenum

We are proud to present our newly developed Plenum for Porsche 991!

Background

The original throttle body on the Porsche 991 is T-shaped, meaning that the airflow from the throttle body undergoes an abrupt change in direction when the flow is split to each intake manifold. It feels natural to design a Y-shaped plenum instead of the T-shaped "straight into the wall" design that the original has!

The finished product

The plenum is designed with soft, sweeping lines where radii and angles are reworked in iterations to achieve the best result. The connections are CNC-machined and the plenum comes with accompanying silicone hoses for optimal fit and durability. The improved airflow is verified in both CFD (Computer Flow Dynamics) and in our own flow bench, Superflow SF1020. Reducing restrictions for the supercharged air reaching the intake contributes to better throttle response and performance gains across the entire rev range!

Development

Starting with 3D scanning of the engine bay to get the physical conditions to work with in our CAD environment, the work to optimize this plenum began. With our experience from previous plenums for Porsche, we immediately realized that we wanted to design this product with a Y-branch rather than the T-shape that the original has. From a flow perspective, this is far better as the air is distributed to the respective intakes in a more advantageous way with less pressure drop. We chose, as before, to manufacture the plenum in cast aluminum as this often allows for shapes that CNC machining cannot achieve, and form never precedes function for us. Maximum flow is more important than the bling factor!
