Plenum for Porsche 992 Turbo & Carrera. Better response across the entire rev range!

Background

With Porsche's launch of the 992, the naturally aspirated engine concept for Carrera models had been abandoned; now all 911s feature forced induction. There are some differences between Carrera and Turbo, not least the cylinder volume, but a number of components are shared – the plenum is one of them! Throughout the entire development phase of all products for the 992, we had full access to a 992, on-site with us. This is always how we work, and it gives us the opportunity to test our theories, calculations, prototypes, and 3D prints without hindrance or delays. We believe this is evident in the finished product – refined as far as possible without compromise. We are confident in what we now have to offer!

The finished product

The plenum is designed with soft, sweeping lines where radii and angles are reworked repeatedly to achieve the best results. The connections are CNC-machined, and the plenum comes with accompanying silicone hoses for optimal fit and durability. The improved airflow has been verified both through CFD (Computer Flow Dynamics) and on our own flow bench, Superflow SF1020. Reducing restrictions for the charged air reaching the intake contributes to better throttle response and performance gains across the entire rev range!

Development

Starting with 3D scanning of the engine bay to establish the physical conditions for working in our CAD environment, the optimization of this plenum began. With our experience from previous plenums for Porsche, we immediately realized that we wanted to design this product with a Y-branch rather than the T-shape of the original. From a flow perspective, this is far superior as the air is distributed to the respective intakes in a more advantageous way with less pressure drop. We chose, as before, to manufacture the plenum from cast aluminum, as this often allows for shapes that CNC machining cannot achieve, and form never precedes function for us. Maximum flow is more important than the "bling" factor!
