B58 Compared to the F80 M3/M4 S55 Engine

The B58 engine shares many similarities with the S55 engine found in the F80 M3/M4 models. Both engines feature a water-to-air charge air cooler (intercooler) connected to its own cooling system, which has a heat exchanger (water cooler) mounted at the front of the car. This heat exchanger cools the system's water, which in turn cools the intake air as it flows through the intercooler. The biggest difference in the B58's system is that the intercooler is integrated into the intake manifold, while the F80 S55's intercooler is a separate unit mounted on top of the engine.

Challenges with the B58's Charge Air Cooler Cooling System

A common problem with tuned B58 engines is that the intercooler quickly experiences "Heat soak" during track driving. High intake temperatures cause the ECU to reduce power or put the car into limp mode. Even aggressive street driving can cause the ECU to pull back ignition timing and reduce power output due to excessively high intake temperatures.

Our Solution

It is clear that the system needs increased cooling capacity to prevent Heat soak. Part of our solution is our do88 Front Intercooler Water Cooler. It is designed to provide increased cooling capacity and help prevent Heat soak. Features:

• 80% larger core than original.
• 2-row core that is 48mm thick, providing an increased active cooling area of a full 36%.
• Quadruple-pass flow, meaning the water passes through the cooler four times instead of two as on the original cooler, ensuring maximum contact of the cooling water with all cooling area.
• Slightly taller cooling fins compared to original, 5mm instead of 4.4mm. This ensures continued good airflow to the engine radiator located behind this cooler, despite the increased core thickness.
• Full-aluminum cooler with durable TIG-welded end tanks.
• Increased fluid volume (2.6 liters more) for optimal heat dissipation.

Installation

Our water cooler includes mounting points for the original transmission cooler and both original stone guards. Some modification of the original plastic radiator frame is required to install the do88 Cooler (see installation instructions).
